Experiments In Self-Amusement: Level 1 - I, Toy

2005 - MDF, perspex, monitors, Sony Playstation 2 with Eye Toy Peripheral, Eye Toy Play 2 Software, DVD Player, DVD Loop

Part of a series that highlights the illusion of choice and interactivity in the medium of video games, Experiments In Self-Amusement: Level 1 – I, Toy features a Playstation 2 console, forced to play itself in endless repetition. This is achieved through an exploitation of the Playstation 2’s Eye Toy peripheral, which allows players to control certain games with body movements.

By placing pre-recorded actions in front of the camera the Playstation 2 is tricked, and effectively rendered useless. No longer a tactile object, a sense of contemplation is evoked; if it can’t be played with, what purpose does it serve?

DANIEL GREEN ’s work stems from a combined influence of the Fluxus movement, and the writings of Guy Debord and the members of the Situationist International. Applying their concepts to a contemporary context, Green is interested in directly engaging with the culture of mass media, and our notions of celebrity. Being amongst one of the first generations of people who have grown up within mass media’s complete grasp, he sees it as only a natural progression to become a producer of media himself. Green is also a founding member of Sydney-based artist collective Dysfunctional Feed.
